Angel numbers abound, otherworldly synchronicities, or a stray butterfly following you around? There’s signs and signals everywhere and anywhere for those with eyes to see.

And your skin is no different.

We’ve decided to crack out the crystal ball, charge up our crystals, and check in with a skin medium (me) to decode what on earth your skin is trying to tell you. It might not be as exciting as your impending fame or fortune, but it’s sure to be just as illuminating.

If you’ve been waiting for a sign to figure out what’s going on with your skin: This is it.

If Your Skin Is:

Cropping Up New Lines Overnight:

Much like the lines on your palms, lines across your face can denote similar forces of life, love, and joy. But in most cases, they’re telling you that your face is dehydrated—and needs a big drink.

Dehydration lines are temporary (hooray!), often found on your forehead and around the eyes when the skin is parched.

What your skin needs: A big uptick in your daily water intake, for one. Then, an ultra-hydrating serum slotted into your routine (like Much Plumper Skin). Apply to damp skin and follow up with a few drops of face oil and a lashing of moisturiser to smooth out those thirsty creases in no time.

On Red Alert:

In all great masterpieces (art, literature, your face), colour conveys great meaning. If your skin is experiencing bouts of redness, it’s probably a sign that your skin is feeling cranky.

Since your skin can have quite the temper, any number of things could be pissing it off. A change of seasons (like dry, windy weather), irritation from overdoing it on the heavy-duty products, or a compromised barrier.

What your skin needs: All the soothing stuff! I’m talking about ceramides, squalane, vitamin E.  Put down the exfoliators, and reach for your hydrating heavyweights (like The Repair Shop, Very Luxe Face Cream, and Face Hero).

Duller Than A Brick Wall:

Radiance on the run? A return is possible.

Flat, tired, and uneven skin that’s seriously lacking its usual luster is caused by two factors: build-up of dead skin cells lurking on the surface of your skin or dehydration that’s zapping the plumpness from your face

What your skin needs: A big clean. Out with the old (cells), in with the new. Start by sweeping a gentle exfoliator across your face to remove build-up and make room for new ones. Replenish with a hydrating serum to fight dehydration.

Breaking Out:

Sometimes, old energy resurfaces to be released. It may take the form of an old flame, past foes, or an angry breakout looming across your face.

Blemishes happen when your pores become clogged by a combination of oil (sebum) and dead skin cells, creating a pesky breeding ground for bacteria. This can happen for a myriad of reasons: hormonal changes, pore-clogging products, or excess oil/grime across your face.

What your skin needs: A reset. Banish old energy (and sebum) with a thorough cleanse (Properly Clean), go in with a salicylic acid exfoliator (that’s the only acid that can get into your pores), and then follow up with something equally soothing and blemish-busting, like Clarifying Face Hero.
