How To Find The Right Face Oil For Your Skin Type

The Face Oil That Loves Oily Skin Reading How To Find The Right Face Oil For Your Skin Type 4 minutes

There’s a science to selecting the right face oil for your skin type. For sure. Different oils have different properties to support different skin types.

I’m painting with very broad brushstrokes when I say this, but all face oils are renowned for their ability to boost (sub: hydrate, replenish, protect) the skin barrier. But it’s the ‘second’ piece of the oil pie that you want to pay closer attention to: Is it anti-inflammatory? Is it antimicrobial? Is it clinically proven to reduce the appearance of breakouts? Shop for your skin type and concerns. No one else's.

There’s so much to love about face oils. Let us help you find The One.

For shiny, sometimes-congested skin.

I know it seems counterintuitive but (the right) face oil is great for oily skin. It’s going to keep your barrier moisturised and balanced, and stop it from overproducing sebum to compensate for underlying dryness. Look for lightweight, non-comedogenic, or dry oils. Bonus points if you can find a formula that’s clinically proven to balance oiliness and shine.

For inflamed, breakout-y skin.

Be picky. Not with your skin. Never ever! But with the face oil you choose to introduce. Because your skin barrier is somewhat compromised. And unlike others, much more prone to blemishes. You wanna tick all the same boxes as above: light, non-comedogenic, dry. And then some. Antibacterial ingredients like bakuchiol, antifungal ingredients like tea tree, and super soothers like centella, are going to support you on your clear skin journey. If it’s clinically proven to reduce the number of pimples and improve the appearance of breakouts? Even better.

For confused, kinda patch-y skin.

You’re a bit flaky here, and gotta pimple surfacing over there. Your skin seems to have a mind of its own. Which means finding a multitargeted face oil to support dryness AND oiliness. Impossible! Think again. Keep an eye out for hydration superstars like vitamin F which will help maintain moisture in the skin barrier, combined with anti-inflammatory ingredients like holy basil to help minimise the look and feel of breakouts that are about to bust through (or are on their way out).

For dry, tight skin.

The ideal match for you is a nourishing face oil. One that can quickly replenish skin that is battling flakiness, redness, roughness, or perhaps just feeling weather-whipped. A potent blend of plant and nut oils is going to expertly replenish all the moisture and essential fatty acids that have been zapped from your skin. Hot tip! You can dab face oils on other dry ‘bendy bits’ that might also need some TLC. (Think: elbows, knees, knuckles, cuticles.)

For cranky, irritated skin.

You’re exclusively hunting down oils that have gentle and calming properties. (But also, stop hunting, we got you.) Something stacked with antioxidants like rosehip or jojoba is going to help dial down any flare-ups. And prevent them from recurring. Incorporating a really lush oil into your routine is going to expertly revive the skin and restore some much needed glow.

For lined, ageing skin.

A face oil, especially when signs of ageing (fine lines, dark spots, loss of elasticity) creep in, is going to become your daily skin booster. Your new best mate. ‘Cos it contributes to that supple, plump, and effortless end-of-routine look. A nourishing formula with rosemary leaf extract and vitamin E to protect your face from environmental stressors is going to be your go-to.
